Common questions
What is an Enrolled Agent?
An Enrolled Agent is a tax practitioner who has either passed the IRS's three-part Special Enrollment Examination or qualified through qualifying IRS experience, and passed a suitability check. EAs can represent taxpayers before the IRS on any tax matter. See Enrolled Agent vs CPA vs tax preparer.
Is an Enrolled Agent approved by the IRS?
The IRS grants enrollment to practice, but this site does not describe anyone as IRS-approved or IRS-certified, and the IRS does not endorse any practitioner. Each profile says the person is listed as an Enrolled Agent in the IRS preparer file, and links to the IRS directory so you can confirm.
Can an Enrolled Agent help with an IRS letter?
Yes. Enrolled Agents can represent you before the IRS once you sign a Form 2848 power of attorney. Start with our guide on what to do when you get an IRS notice, and note the response date printed on the letter.
How do I check someone's credentials?
Use the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers, and ask for the preparer's PTIN. Our guide how to verify a tax professional walks through it.
How much does an Enrolled Agent cost?
Fees are set by each practice and vary with the work: a simple return, a business return, or representation in a collection or audit matter. Ask for the fee in writing before work starts. Be wary of anyone who bases a fee on a percentage of your refund.
Why isn't my practice listed?
We list practitioners with the EA credential, a phone number and a business name or website in the IRS file. If you are missing or want to correct something, use the corrections page; changes to the IRS file itself must go through the IRS.
